Nature's International Certification Services (NICS), an accredited USDA organic certification agency, currently has a job opening for a Certification Specialist to assist in the certification review process. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of farming practices and foods systems with an emphasis relating to the organic industry being preferred. The ability to work collaboratively with clients and coworkers while paying attention to detail is necessary, as are excellent organizational skills and an ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

Primary duties of a Certification Specialist will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Review client organic system plans, inspection reports, and supporting documentation to determine applicable National Organic Program (NOP) compliance status
  • Provide and respond with information to potential clients requesting organic certification with NICS
  • Serve as a client contact person, as applicable
  • Assist with various Certification Committee work and attend meetings, as applicable
  • Participate in Certification/Staff meetings and trainings
  • Represent NICS at events and meetings, as applicable
  • Support the development of certification forms and documents
  • Implement certification policies and procedures as identified by NICS and NOP

Job requirements for the Certification Specialist position includes:

  • Knowledge and/or experience with organic agricultural concepts for crops, livestock, and processing
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance
  • Knowledge of NOP regulations and policy
  • Familiarity with the organic certification process
  • Excellent organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Analytical problem-solving ability
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform tasks within deadlines
  • Computer proficient in word processing, internet research, and databases
  • Performance of work with utmost honesty and integrity
  • Understands and appreciates importance of extraordinary customer service
  • Perform additional tasks relevant to the organization as assigned by managers and executive directors

The Certification Specialist position encompasses a regulatory understanding of the NOP, and new opportunities for learning are continuous. The applicant must have a desire to make a multi-year commitment to the NICS certification program in order to understand the diversity involved with the position; therefore, please only apply if you are willing to make this type of commitment to the organic industry. The position mainly consists within a sedentary office environment, but some travel may be required with a valid driver's license.
